Mark Kelley has been the full-time bass chair with the Roots since 2011, a gig he landed after being asked to sub for Christian McBride in Questlove’s band Mo’ Meta Blues.
After subbing in Mo’ Meta Blues in 2011, Mr. Kelley landed a gig backing Michael McDonald and Sara Bareilles at the fourth annual Roots picnic. A month and a half later, he was offered the full-time role with the Roots.

Daniel Spearman is a Trumpeter, Pianist, Composer and educator from Camden, New Jersey. Beginning at the age of 5 Daniel was captivated by music, first playing the piano then picking up the trumpet in high school. Daniel graduated with highest honors from the Oberlin College and Conservatory of music with degrees in Africana Studies and Jazz Piano and has studied under the likes of Dan Wall, Sean Jones, Eddie Henderson and Sullivan Fortner. Mr. Spearman performed most recently with R & B artist, Giveon, on the Tonight Show!

Austin Marlow, Drummer for Philly’s Hottest American soul, funk, and alternative band, SnackTime, will teach you how to tighten the groove and lock in with rest of the band!

Chill Moody is a beloved and eloquent rapper, writer, activist and entrepreneur whose work always touches base with his hometown of Philadelphia.
Mr. Moody has been named both an official Philadelphia Music Ambassador and The Mann Center’s 2023 Community Artist-in-Residence. He performed at The Mann in celebration of hip hop’s 50th anniversary and also wrote and performed epic works like “Black Metropolis” with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

For elementary & middle school band players (Grades 5-8) who have 2+ years experience on their instrument. Guitar, bass, piano welcome!
Dates: July 7 - 11, 2025
Hours: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Location: Drexel Hill Middle School - 3001 State Rd., Drexel Hill, PA 19026
Camp Fees: In District - $225.00 Out of District - $299.00
Registration will close on June 27, 2025
All tuition payments are due on June 27, 2025.
Campers must provide own lunch.
Meet Hiruy Tirfe, Camp Director &
Musical Mastermind Behind JazzJam! Camp Magic
Hailing from the vibrant city of Philadelphia and raised in Upper Darby, Hiruy Tirfe is not just a saxophonist; he’s a musical force to be reckoned with. Tirfe has graced the stage with a diverse array of artists, from The Roots and Solange Knowles to Patti LaBelle and beyond. As a former protégé of Upper Darby’s MusicMan, Brad Schoener, Tirfe’s musical journey has been nothing short of spectacular.
His list of accolades includes being a two-time “Outstanding Soloist” winner at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in 2016 and 2017. Tirfe has left his musical imprint on iconic venues such as Radio City Music Hall, Made In America Festival, AfroPunk Festival, and the John F. Kennedy Center, just to name a few.
